Is SAP Rise changing the profile of the SAP BASIS System Administrator?

SAP Rise is a new offering from SAP. It helps customers move to the cloud and migrate to a modern ERP. The contract of Platform Infrastructure, Software license, managing those teams, and Keep System Running activities are all taken care of by SAP. There is a long role and responsibility catalog that is available online for one to see. In the next 10 years, we will see a huge movement in SAP Estate to move to RISE.

There are two ways to go to RISE. One is to go on HANA Public Cloud, a software-as-a-service (SaaS) offering where businesses can use standard services available with limited scope to customize. The other one is to go Private Cloud Edition (PCE) where you get your own systems that you can customize as per need. SAP provides a fully managed cloud infrastructure that includes the SAP HANA database, and SAP S/4HANA application layer, and one can install all the components. An interim solution to support hosting any DB also exists but with limitations. In both options, the Platform Basis Administration activities for Keeping Systems Running are performed by SAP.

SAP Basis administrators will no longer have access to the infrastructure layer, nor will they perform any Environment Basis work. That will be fully managed by SAP. The Basis resource will continue to work in the application layer. They will continue to focus on business processes, coordinate for IT and optimize. This means that SAP Basis roles will become more focused on delivering business value through the application layer.

We believe the profile of an SAP Basis consultant would demand the ability to manage not just the SAP Netweaver/ABAP Platform but also the cloud solutions, Hyperscaler services, and SAP BTP platform.
SAP Platform Basis roles are not going away. Those will still be there, at SAP and its partners who will support RISE for SAP. SAP Applications Basis roles will continue to remain with System Integrators and Customers as is today. A full stack Basis exposure that supports platform to applications is vanishing. Automation will further make many roles obsolete.

It is time the Basis Administrators start honing additional skills. Automation skill is a natural move for a Basis resource. Solution Architecture is a promising career. Learning business process skills always help. To start this learning journey leverage the training available in the organization to widen your skill. SAP's free Online Learning platform OpenSAP is a good place to hear directly from the architects and technology leaders and the content is rich and engaging. Wishing you a HAPPY LEARNING!
